AI Training vs. AI Consulting: Which Does Your Team Actually Need?

Short answer: AI training teaches your team how to use AI well. AI consulting helps you decide what to do about AI in the first place. Most companies need both, but in a specific order: consulting to clarify, then training to execute. Buying the wrong one, or the right one out of order, is the most expensive mistake I see.

"We need AI training" and "we need an AI consultant" sound like the same sentence. They are not.

When training is the right move

You need training when your team has access to AI tools and is using them inconsistently, unsafely, or not at all. The decisions are already made. Microsoft 365 is in place, ChatGPT is on someone's tab, leadership has said "use AI." What is missing is skill: how to write a prompt that works, when to trust output, what not to paste, how to build a habit instead of a hobby. If "people are guessing at prompts" or "we are worried about data leaks" describes your team, that is a training problem.

When consulting is the right move

You need consulting when the decisions have not been made yet. Which tools fit your workflows? Where does AI create value vs add risk? What is the right policy for client data? Should you build, buy, or train people first? Consulting is mostly clarity work. You are paying for an outside brain that has seen this play out elsewhere and can tell you, honestly, where to put your next $5,000. If "we do not know where to start" or "we keep buying AI tools nobody uses" describes you, that is a consulting problem.

Why the order matters

Train a team without first deciding which tools fit your stack, and you will teach them on tools you abandon in six months. Consult on strategy without ever training the team, and you will have a beautiful AI roadmap and zero adoption. A simple test

Ask one question: "If I gave my team a perfect AI tool tomorrow, would they use it well?" If the answer is "no, they would guess at prompts and paste things they should not," start with training.
